Hello Neighbour

Haha, seems like every post i make always begins with me making an excuse for not posting. Well, I do have one this time. I'm spending my days designing character for a game I can't mention yet. There, does that sound alright to you? Haha

Well, I can't really post my stuff from this assignment, well, not yet at least. So here are some studies, some new some old.

2nd Wind

I've been lying to myself all this time, I can't draw.
Seriously, my works are jokes, and everyone knows it. I've been trying to learn how to, but the fact of the matter is I've just been cheating.
I'm probably a fool wasting my time away with mindless doodles, but if I learnt anything, it's how much I suck.

So, I'm even more determined to get my foundation. I'm paraphrasing here, but I believe there's a saying, 'One must know his weakness before he can improve.' If I actually want a future in this, I've gotta work hard. It's frustrating, but I guess that just makes the fruit sweeter.

That said, I'm asking, no, begging all you guys and gals out there to help me. Help burn me.
That head is weird? Arm too short? Pencil not pencil-ly enough? Please tell me. You don't need to be an artist to understand art, you just need to be human to know when something looks weird. Hey, if I'm willing to burn myself, you should too.

Scanner is dead

My dad's computer just gave up on us last week, and just refuses to boot up, bringing down the scanner with it.
So until it gets fixed, I got no new sketches to show.
I could just bring the scanner over to my computer, but that would require fighting some serious battles, namely against 2 whole mess of wires and organising some space. Call me lazy, but once the com is fixed I'd just have to put everything back. So no thanks, I'd rather wait out this war.

I'll just buy some update time and put up this old thing I did for a friend for his friend. Eh, this friend asked to be anonymous so I can't tell whose or who this is, but its just a simple caricature. =)

So, what are you doing now?

I get that question alot lately. As well as fairly same reaction.
I guess you have to be earning money to appear normal. Should be finishing my portfolios by November. And then its probably time to get chained down.

The first couple of pics are new concepts of the boy mentioned in my earlier posts. I think this'll probably be the design we're using. (Dog too)

The progress so far

Yea I know I've not been updating. Truth is, I kinda think my sketches aren't really worth posting anyways.
I do have some of my portfolio peices I wanna put up, but they're in A3, and my puny A4 scanner refuses to work with them.
So until i get them resized for submission, which I'm holding on til I get more out, this blog probably won't see them for a while.

Looking back, I've burned through 4 full sketchbooks since July, which may not mean much to most better artists, but it's probably the most I've drawn within 3 months ever. There have been improvements, which I've yet to document on this blog, but meh, I need to improve more. This is kinda where I'm feeling right now. (Copper comic by Kazu Kabuishi)

Parkour

Did these after watching some parkour clips on youtube. If you not sure what I'm talking about, think Yamakasi. Really amazing stuff being done with the human body.

Some links here and here. Enjoy =)

Progress?

Heya!
This is the result of my 'training' so far. Hmm, not there yet, but I can feel it. That first picture is something from work. Just a little concept, but I think it kinda sums it up.
Its come to my attention that the average male anatomy really bites. One word -

Potbelly.
I think a good percentage of men have them. Sure, fun to draw, gives a little handle on character, but honest to goodness dang hideous to look at. Almost makes me want to execise, well, almost. Thank goodness for metabolism.
I'm not sure if girls have them though. Maybe they do and we pass them over thinking, 'Maybe she's pregnant!'

I dunno, I think I might've been a little mentally scarred.

Back to (Home)School

Yea, been going back to relearn how to draw. Just wasn't happy with what I produced so far.
Been doing a whole lot of life drawings, nothing but it in fact. Bought a new book called Force by Michael D. Mattesi. Real great dynamic life drawing book which really opened my eyes. Will post stuff when I get a firmer grip on it.

Anyways, after a few weeks of execises,I kinda got a little bored and just started to just doodle, like the good ol' days. Eventually, the doodles grew to become concepts for the project with the Kwan. I showed him a few, which he liked, and asked me to just continue what I was doing.
I'm not complaining, its really fun to just wander with a pencil, brings back why I wanted to do animation in the first place.Of course, being slightly better with a pencil than I was back then really helped, lol. Eh, the doodles are above, for you beautiful people =)

This looks familiar

Concepts, nowhere near the final stuff. Some input would be nice =)

(Might have gone overboard with the lance though, what I thought was a good idea in my head came out looking like a giant streak knife)

Colours

Ah no new sketches today, but i do come with some killer sites =D

Donna's been exposing me to some killer blogs, some from Canadian artists.
Total Drama Island
MythUnderstood
The Gas Pump
Todd Ramsay
K. Schmiddy-Schmidderson

And Alex pointed me to a DS painting software, called Colours!. Pictochat can eat snails, this baby can even playback all your recorded strokes! I highly reccomend playing around with this if you own a DS yourself. I'm still trying to figure out how to transfer drawings onto a pc though. Seems that I have a problem saving my stuff so far.

Oh oh, one more thing, do catch this movie, Paprika, by Satoshi Kon. Critics claim it to be confusing, but I really loved how they did their cuts.

Itsy Bitsy Spider

woa hey *brushes the cobwebs away*
hows it hanging. Must've been stuck in time, didn't realise I haven't been updating for so long.

Been doing DigiPen's portfolio, nothing special, just observational drawings, some of them above. That last one was a practice in inking, meant to be Ligne Claire, but old habits die hard I guess. Actually did 3, some practice for DG, but the other 2 pieces went horribly wrong though XD

I went back to NYP today, to talk to Hanxin about his project. I think it has potential to be a cartoon sitcom. I shan't say more about it though, gonna respect creativity ownership. Can't wait to start work on it. (Edit; I removed my lame catchphrase because that joked sucked. Sorry!)
We decided to poke into Block M for a bit, and met up with some of our classmates who signed on to NYP. To quote KaFai, "Sell your soul to NYP man, you get to work here." Had more sobering news about the industry, seems like thats all I'm hearing nowadays. Perhaps I am just hiding. Well, if anything, its a much needed slap in the face.

A little Lift

Was reading the Flight Forums last night, and I came across this thread about artists and their confidence. Was real inspiring and enlightening, so I'd thought I share it here. Gotta work hard and make sure I'm not type 2 or 5 haha.

After some down time, I'm gonna finish up a portfolio piece. Will post it up when done =D

Procrastination Central

Ah the lack of updates.

Recently I've been plague by sleepness nights (which resulted in great dreams). My mind and body doesn't seem to wanna work together. In the day when my body's revving to go, the mind gets pulled down with headaches, and at night when I'm about to sleep, my minds racing with ideas and stories, right when my body's too lazy to move. I have to find a way to solve this problem.

Speaking of dreams, I love having them. Without them, I'd probably never go to sleep to begin with. Just last week I had a couple of real interesting ones, interesting enough to pen them down. I won't bore you with details, but my subconcious really gave me a couple of solid characters to work with, as well as a possible story.Yea I really needed it, was actually in a slump days before this dream. The first 2 sketches are what I could remeber vividly.

Also, did abit more doodles for character design. Meh I dun really like it, reminds too much of Calvin (& Hobbs). Didn't intend it to though.

Where was I?

Ha, where have I been...
Ah long story short; Not here =x

Well, lets just move along shall we? Above are some doodles I thought deserve some highlight. Did most of them while stuck in camp. Alot of it are character designs for a project with the Kwan, which actually had been shelved away a long time ago. But something just struck us recently, and we're going at again from a different direction. More will be discussed about it, when its more solid.

I saw a couple of movie just last week, and I think they're in everyone's minds right now. Die Hard 4.0 and Transformers weee! Alot of my friends say Transformers kicked ass, and I agree, seeing(and hearing) the cg 'bots do their thing to the transform sound was just the coolest thing ever. Though I thought more of the story could've revolved round the Autobots (I smell a sequel!)
I dunno, I kinda enjoyed Die Hard more though. 15mins into it and I knew it was gonna be a good ride. Or maybe its just cause I saw it first. But everyone's gotta agree this movie's best viewed without thinking. I mean, how does a tech savvy hacker NOT know there's some C4 hidden in his CPU? Whatever, let the guy explode =D.

Oh, and I just saw the pilot episode for this new mystery series Psych. It's up there with Monk, but the main characters totally flambouyant. He's like this girl watching, fast talking, fake psychic who has an amazing eye for details, and oddly reminds me alot of one of my friends (note the word flambouyant, you know who you are..) Great show, gotta catch it if you have cable.

Alright, is all that enough to cover for the last week? haha

Keeping it together

Ah, so fast and already lack of updates. Been going back to camp even when I don't need to. Ah enough bitching. Didn't have time time to do some solid stuff so I'm gonna put this old thing I did while watching TV with my bunkmates. You know who you are =D (Just a lil' explanation, the TV was put in a huge cabinet to be hid away from outsiders)
I still need to concentrate on my portfolios though. Too many random drawings, pointless if I can't use them haha

I'm late

Seems like I missed a day haha.

Back to Monday, had to go back camp today, but I have done a few more sketches..these I hoping to paint.
The last 2 are actually fanart for a game I'm wasting my time on, Granado Espada. The character is their Elementalist, or Warlock in other versions. I think they came up with a really great idea..the pants dress..erh thing. Yea, its not really a dress with a gaping hole, its actually shorts, with a dress around. Apparantly I'm not doing it much justice, but you should check out their character designs at their site. Will definately have to tweak the legs on her >.>. She kinda looks like a flamingo on one foot haha.

Baby steps

Ha 2nd post!

Well, the blog is really looking skinny, so I'm gonna add these sketches I did when i created this blog.

Nothing special just portrait practices. I'm just gunning for more stuff for my portfolios now. Plan to submit a few, and I dun think these make the mark heh. Ah we'll see.
